Capture It While You Remember
Start with one or two written steps, or add photos, voice, video, preparation notes and what success should look like.
Your own step-by-step guides
Remember how you did it. Find it when you need it.
How Did I Do That? lets you save the steps, photos, voice notes and videos that helped you do something successfully, then find and follow those instructions again later.
Made for the things you want to remember
Search the information you've already saved, even when you only remember part of it. The app helps you find your own guides; it does not invent new instructions.
Start with one or two written steps, or add photos, voice, video, preparation notes and what success should look like.
Search by guide name or use Ask How I Did It to look through the categories, notes and steps you saved.
Words visible in saved photos and spoken words from voice recordings or videos can help you rediscover a guide.
Why This Matched shows whether a result came from a title, step, note, category or words found in saved media.
Guided Follow presents Before You Start information, each step and its linked media in a focused sequence.
Not Yet Verified shows a guide has not been confirmed. Verified shows that you confirmed it worked, and Changed Since Verified lets you know an important part has changed.
When appropriate, the app keeps one previous version that was known to work, so you have something reliable to refer back to.
Create a complete backup when you want an extra copy. Recently Deleted helps recover mistakes, and the app asks which version to keep if two devices change the same part differently.
Inside the app
Explore some of the ways you can capture, find and follow your saved guides.
How it works
Record a useful title and the steps or media you will want next time.
Browse by category or search words you remember from the guide or its saved media.
Review preparation information, then move through the instructions one step at a time.
Mark that it still works, or update it while retaining the last working version.
Works offline
Keep reading and updating your guides without a connection. Pending changes remain safely stored on your device until iCloud Sync can continue.
Across your Apple devices
Optional iCloud Sync keeps your guides available across your Apple devices. Changes are saved on your device first and begin syncing while the app is open. The app also checks for updates when you open it or return to it.
Private by design
Your guides are saved on your device first. Optional iCloud Sync uses your private iCloud account to keep supported data and media available across your devices. There is no separate SKAV account, no advertising and no analytics.
Text recognition in photos and recognition of spoken words in voice recordings and videos are handled on your device. Backups are saved to a Files location you choose.

Open Settings and read the iCloud Sync status. If it says Needs Attention, follow the choice shown there. If the issue continues, include the device models and operating system versions in your support message.
A complete backup is a file you create and keep in a Files location you choose. Recently Deleted keeps deleted guides in the app for 30 days unless you delete them permanently.
Check the guide and Storage Dashboard first. Keep any working backup unchanged while you investigate, then contact support and tell us what you see on screen.
How Did I Do That? works on iPhone and iPad, and can run on compatible Apple silicon Macs. Contact support if you need help with a particular device or operating system version.
